humanism
idea that human beings were the most important; everything was focused on the individual; main idea was to create a well-rounded human being
Northern Humanists
humanism in northern Europe and England sprang largely from Italian sources, it did not emerge exclusively as an outgrowth of later Italian humanism. Non-Italian scholars and poets found inspiration in the full sweep of the Italian tradition
Erasmus
the best known Christian humanist who called his view “philosophy of Christ”- Christianity should show people how to live good lives; The Praise of Folly: criticizes aspects of his society in need of change
Francesco Petrarch
the father of Italian Renaissance humanism; looked for forgotten Latin manuscripts and similar manuscripts in monastic libraries throughout Europe; began the humanist emphasis on using pure classical Latin
Albrecht Durer
absorbed Italian laws of perspective; tried to achieve standard of ideal beauty that was based on a careful examination of humans
Christian Humanism
a movement that developed in northern Europe during the Renaissance combining classical learning (humanism) with the goal of reforming the Catholic Church; believed in ability of human beings to reason and improve themselves
Michelangelo
painted ceiling of Sistine Chapel; painted human being with perfect proportions; beauty of idealized human reflects divine beauty
Raphael
achieved ideal of beauty surpassing human standards; his school revealed world of balance, harmony, and order
Masaccio
Early Renaissance painter; creator of frescoes whose figures had depth and came alive; could create the illusion of three dimensions, leading to a new realistic style
Machiavelli
Wrote The Prince- showed how to attain and keep power
Renaissance
a period of rebirth and emergence of art and culture. Its main idea was humanism and having a more secular view point.
