An earthquake has occurred in many countries.
Many people have died in this earthquake. The most important example is the 1999 Turkey earthquake that occurred on August 17. It affected Istanbul, Avcilar, and Yalova in Turkey. What has improved before and after this earthquake? What is the current situation regarding earthquakes?
After the earthquake on August 17, nothing was the same and people continued to suffer. We have to learn to live with earthquakes.
The life and property lost to the earthquakes that occurred on August 17th and September 12th. Earthquakes are known to be natural events that people aren’t interested in due to ignorance, but in fact, they are disasters. Other civilized countries take precautions and know this fact very well. They are healthier than other people and therefore, they have built very good buildings over the years.
Turkey hasn’t improved. The reason for earthquakes is that people try to earn more money by building inadequate and not lasting buildings. We need to live in new buildings that are earthquake-ready. People haven’t turned back to their old way of life after many disasters in Turkey. Turkey has lived through many disasters, including the one in August 17, 1999.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck Marmara at 03:02:45, causing destruction. Strong buildings are crucial for saving lives, and the World Bank and Ministry of Public Works have made efforts to construct buildings that can withstand earthquakes. However, some of the World Bank’s smaller buildings have been identified as a cause of earthquake-related fatalities.
Some companies stopped construction because of an economic attack in Turkey. People who had already built buildings were faced with deficiencies. Due to the increase in unemployment, the company closed in Turkey. People began to live in unsuitable buildings. Turkish engineers collected 10 billion dollars in help from inside and outside, but the government only gave Yalova 1.5 billion dollars.
Nothing is unchanged. Earthquake victims work at a rate of 42.3 per 100 million dollars in Marmara. Other research results include:
- 47% of families have measures at home
- 42.2% of families are tenants
- 7.7% of families are lodging
- 61.7% of families live in apartments
- 29% of families live in houses
The investment share received less budget from the government. Departments such as health, education, social security, etc. were restricted due to this. The people affected by the earthquake faced significant problems.
This problem didn’t give in to building people. However, self-criticism should make August’s anniversary suitable for building in this geography. We are honest with ourselves, therefore we work to protect our future.
