In modern day schools, teachers are giving students an excess amount of homework causing an increase of sleep deprivation among grade 6-12 which leads to lack of focus in school. This can lead to lower grades. Some students also do not have the correct resources at home to get their work done. From all of this we can see that homework is causing an overall problem throughout most ages. This means that homework should be banned from all public schools to prevent heath and education problems.
The last thing a student wants to do is to go to dread going home because of the hours of homework they have to do. (College-Homework-Help.org “Should Homework Be Banned: Advantages & Disadvantages of After-Class Tasks” 2019) College Homework Help states, “2 hours of homework is a punishment after sitting 8 hours in class. Going outside, dedicating time to friends, attending hobby clubs, helping parents, and, yes, watching TV and playing games make kids feel kids. Teachers should provide them with more free time.” By forcing students to go to school for a whole 8 hours and making them dread going back home because they have to do homework it just isn’t fair. Another way banning homework in all public schools would benefit students is that by giving students free time it would take the stress off their shoulders, leading me into my next claim.
Homework consumes free time that students could be using for more important things like spending time with loved ones or working on a job outside of school. But because teachers give students so much homework students do get the free time that they need to live a happy and long life. (HuffPost “5 Reasons Why Homework Is Bad For Your Child” October 07, 2016) “Children need time to spend with their family, catch up with friends and attend extracurricular activities so they can refresh their minds and bodies”
Just think about it. If we don’t have enough time to spend with our family because of extra school work at home, it is just depriving us from necessities. We need to be able to spend time with our families because that is a very important aspect of life. Another thing we need to know how to do is how to work in a social environment. If students have less homework they would be able to spend time at a job if wanted. (HuffPost “5 Reasons Why Homework Is Bad For Your Child” October 07, 2016) In 2016, a website titled HuffPost stated, “For older students, school work might also compete with both part-time and casual work, making it difficult for them to strike a balance between school and work.” Older students are able to work and if they work, it could better their ability to do a certain job in the future but by giving homework it takes away from the time they have left to do that job.
The main cause of low sleep amounts among students grades 6-12 is because of excessive homework that cause students to stay up until 12 am doing all of the work that the teachers assigned that night. Students barely get enough sleep because of all these loads of homework. (Craig Canapari, MD “Homework vs. Sleep: A Major Cause of Stress in Teens” November 12, 2015) “Sleep deprivation in teenagers is an epidemic here in the US, with up to 90% of teenagers not getting enough sleep on school nights.” Because of the excessive homework that students have, it has messed up their regular sleep schedule which can lead most students to having messed up grades because of lack of focus in school. And it isn’t only recently that students have been getting excessive amounts of homework, students have been receiving this much homework for a while. (Craig Canapari, MD “Homework vs. Sleep: A Major Cause of Stress in Teens” November 12, 2015) In an article i read titled “Homework vs. Sleep: A Major Cause of Stress in Teens”, it stated, “Some studies suggest that the amount of homework which teenagers receive has stayed constant over time.” Students are always receiving excessive homework although the recommended about of homework is 10 min each class per grade level, and this isn’t even a newsflash.
In conclusion, I believe that homework should be banned in all public school to ease students from all the work they already have to do during the school day. Homework can lead to sleep deprivation, less focus, and lower grades instead of better grades. It also does not allow you to spend enough time with loved ones. So as you can see homework is becoming a serious problem.
