Cronus-the supreme god until Zeus dethroned him; son of Uranus and Gaea in ancient Greek mythology; identified with Roman Saturn Ocean- A titan and grand father of Amphirite. He was the lord of the river Ocean, the great river encircling the world, his wife was Tethys.
All daughters were river nymphs and sons were gods of the great river. He was the father of the heroes Perseus and Heracles, the latter of whom once wrestled him to a draw. Zeus was the youngest son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. When he was born, his father Cronus intended to swallow him as he had all of Zeus’s siblings: Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Demeter and Hera.
But Rhea hid the newborn in a cave on Mount Dicte in Crete. (To this day, the guides at the “cave of Zeus” use their flashlights to cast shadow puppets in the cave, creating images of baby Zeus from the myth. ) When he had grown up, Zeus caused Cronus to vomit up his sisters and brothers, and these gods joined him in fighting to wrest control of the universe from the Titans and Cronus, their king. Having deposed his father and the other Titans, Zeus imprisoned most of them in the underworld of Tartarus.
Then he and his brothers Poseidon and Hades divided creation between them. Poseidon received the sea as his domain, Hades got the Underworld and Zeus took the sky. Zeus also was accorded supreme authority on earth and on Mount Olympus. Poseidon- was the god of the sea, earthquakes and horses.
Although he was officially one of the supreme gods of Mount Olympus, he spent most of his time in his watery domain. Hades- brother of Zeus and ruler of the underworld, he owned and invisible hat, and married to Persephone. Hestia- sister of Zeus and goddess of the hearth, she played a minor role, and eventually gave up her seat in Olympus. Hera- Zeus’ wife and sister , she was the protector of marriage and spiteful of Zeus’ adultery. Ares- son of Zeus and Hera, the god of war.
He was hated by his own parents, and the “ruthless” god. Athena- the child of Zeus’s own creation, she is the protector of civilization, agriculture and crafts. Apollo- son of Zeus and Leto, the most Greek of gods. Master of music and poetry. Aphrodite- daughter of Zeus and Dione and the goddess of love and beauty. Hermes- was the son of Zeus and Maia.
He was the messenger of Zeus, he was the most cunning of the gods and a master thief. Artemis- was the virgin goddess of the hunt. She helped women in childbirth but also brought sudden death with her arrows. Artemis and her brother Apollo were the children of Zeus and Leto. In some versions of their myth, Artemis was born first and helped her mother to deliver Apollo.
Hephastus- was the lame god of fire and crafts or the two together, hence of blacksmiths. Hephaestus was the son of Zeus and Hera or, in some accounts, of Hera alone. He limped because he was born lame, which caused his mother to throw him off Mount Olympus. Or in other accounts he interceded in a fight between Zeus and Hera, and Zeus took him by the foot and threw him from Olympus to the earth far below. Eros- God of love, and fairest of the deathless gods.
Iris- the goddess of rainbows and a messenger of the gods. Three Graces- the daughters of Zeus and Eurynome : Aglaia- splendor, Euphrosyne- Mirth, and Thalia- good cheer. The gods sent him to forever thirst and hunger and hades and restored his son. Medusa- One of three Gorgons , snake headed, winged creatures that were horrible to men, she was slain by Perseus. Hercules- son of Zeus and the strongest man o the planet, he was not a god but considered equal. Uranus- God of the sky and father of CronusGaea- Mother earth, and mother of CronusPsyche- a daughter of a mythical king.
She was the envy of Venus and as such was doomed vever to marry until Apollo helped her. Cerberus- the three headed, dragon tailed dog who guards the gates of hades to keep all the souls from escaping. Cyclopses- sons of Poseidon. They are giants with one huge eye. They are attacked by Ulysses during the Odyssey.
Narcissus- The most handsome lad in Greece who did not love anyone, and eventually came to love himself through a misfortunate prayer and the help of Nemesis. After his death a new flower was created, the Hyacinth. Hyacinth- The flower that sprang from Narcissus’ grave. Adonis- Another hot guy who broke girls’ hearts and had flowers created in his honor.
Furies: Tisiphone, Megaera, and Alecto. They punished sinners on erath and administered justice in the underworld. Nike- Latin- Victoria. She was the goddess of victory.
