Darfur is a one of the most naturally beautiful and culturally rich Sudanese states. Unfortunately, it is well known for its longstanding conflicts and huge humanitarian crisis. This had adversely affected its health system and led to sever doctor’s shortage and poor medical establishments. Driven by my sense of adventure and passion to help less fortunate populations I volunteered to complete my postgraduate medical rotation there.
Despite the strong opposition from my family and friends, I felt that its part of my career path to reach out for individuals who do not have access to decent medical services. I joined Aldiean teaching hospital in Eastern Darfur where we could hear gunshots and bombs echoes in distant almost daily. Due to the lack of sufficient specialized physicians, it was not uncommon for me to help out in the emergency room, surgical operating room, obstetrical and gynecology department and volunteer to run the local HIV control program.
I was successful in providing both therapeutic and preventive care to a very diverse population. I was personally satisfied with my experience and ended up staying there for more than two and a half years. This enriched my life and medical skills, which shaped my hardworking, humanitarian and .dedicated personality
I joined the Ministry of Health – Oman as a general practitioner. There, I appreciated the difference in providing primary medical services in peace and war. I continued to work as a primary care provider for last two and half years and delivered high quality care to a diverse patient population. Oman has one of the region’s best healthcare systems and I was involved in various workshops and programs such as the Elderly Care Program, National Screening Program, and Asthmatics Patients Care Program.
Participating in these programs has further expanded my knowledge and increased my passion for family medicine. I effectively apply what I learned in a positive and productive way and it was no surprise to me that our health center performance indicators in geriatrics was among the tops .in the state during 2013-2014
It is like a luxury for me to take detailed history, listen to patient’s stories and fulfill their concern. I believe in the roll of education and counseling in overcome patient frustration and adapt with their maladies. Actually, I didn’t surprise as my communication skill described with “high performance” in my recent USMLE Step 2 CS results.
As a general practitioner, I harbor great joy in interaction with the local community; no other medical discipline can give you such pleasure. Because most of my experience was in rural areas, thanks to my excellent adaptive abilities, I believe in the importance of presenting high .quality health care to these communities I am a dedicated hardworking person; perfection has always been my style and focusing on small details behind the scenes is a daily habit for me. Attending and participating in major rounds and seminars is something I look forward to. I feel great joy in teaching my .juniors and colleagues and passing on my knowledge and experiences
My primary goal in entering a training program in the U.S. is to build my clinical skills and teaching as well as promoting basic science and research. I wish to gain solid medical training that will enable me to focus my efforts in Family Medicine. Being a part of your residency program will enable me share my knowledge and experience with my colleagues and gain high quality medical educationthat I could hand to the next doctors .generations especially in the third world as well as hot conflicts zones.
Throughout my journey from medical school till today, an old Chinese quote was always present in my mind; “Every battle can be won even before it starts”. I realized that this could be applied to almost all life battles especially in the in primary care and family medicine which is the battlefield front line against different maladies. I consider myself fortunate to have served in different situations where I had the chance to refine my medical, professional and personal skills.
I learned how to balance between professionalism and sense of humor, how to interact with patients with various needs and how to manage complexities in a very high demand field where organizational skills are required. I have always been passionate to take actions where I can make noticeable changes and leave permanent prints .and family medicine will fulfill my desire.
