Year 11 HESS restricted: Religion in Australia Practical Assignment Part One – Guest Speakers (Lawyers)
Every day, as the world becomes more dangerous due to conflicts between countries resulting in wars and terrorist events, innocent people seek asylum to escape persecution in their homeland.
High populations of needy people are entering Australia in order to renew their lives and provide an improved environment for their children to live and study. However, due to laws, people are not allowed to enter Australia without a visa permit. As a result, these homeless people are sent to detention centers where they are kept locked up for years. The government states that these people are unlawful and have intentions of harming Australia and its people. The media is spreading rumors about these incidents and people involved, without realizing that there are still people who are clean and innocent but are finding a way to live life in peace. The speech of Hannah and Jane provides insight into the conditions of Baxter Detention Center, which are unbearable to witness.
These high-fenced, isolated centers hold a huge mass of refugees and restrict any lawyers or visitors from entering. There is a lack of green plants and no right to plant any within the center. Additionally, there is only a small medical center, which is overwhelmed due to the high population. Sick people have to wait for their turn. The only activities available to the people are watching television, playing on computers, or watching the sky since there are no windows to view the outside world. These people are given the least amount of human rights.
The only human rights that were acted upon were those seeking refuge from war, persecution, discrimination, and fears of future life. Without taking notice of any men, women, or children, everyone was treated the same, like a farm full of animals. Through the process of detaining these helpless people, the Australian government has failed to support any matter of need and human rights. Instead, they have done the opposite and imprisoned them in thick high walls. Keeping them in these centers only makes their lives even worse as they can’t let go of the visions held inside them of the dramatic events they have seen. The government doesn’t see the bright side of letting these people free into the country. By doing so, they could have people employ more businesses and realize that they are rescuing lives from persecution. Instead, they are acting against what the law states, where men and women have the right to live a happy life. These stories conflict with the images presented in the media due to the fact that the only source providing the story is through the government’s views and not what the public has to see for themselves as the areas are restricted and forbidden.
As a result of these cruel and inhumane detainments, many members of the public are against the government’s treatment of these individuals. Even children at a young age are aware of these issues.
Part Two: Surveys and Interviews
The main purpose of this assignment is to investigate why refugees are being treated in this way and why they come to our country seeking asylum. Through the process of surveying and interviewing, we will show what the public has to say about this matter, as well as their religious points of view. My aim for this survey is to target a range of different ages and gather their opinions on this topic.
The reason why I chose to survey people at different ages is because I believe that at different ages, people have different views regarding the issue based on their knowledge, which provides them with better opinions.
As shown on the chart above, out of ten people, six say that they do not support the government’s stance on asylum seekers, while the other four do. Of those four people who support the government, they do so because they believe that the asylum seekers are illegally entering the country without a permit and that the government is providing them with a bed and shelter, rather than being persecuted wherever they live. They also believe that the media is not fair.
