Our world is now currently overwhelmed with the use of technology. Technology cannot be blamed fully as the worst thing to happen in human history. Yet, it cannot be believed as the sole thing that we must depend on constantly. Needless to say, technology can equally be good and bad for the society. The most visible effect of technology is the fact that it facilitates the lives of mankind but on the other hand it also raises the possibility of separation in society and disappearance on culture’s importance.
Culture is formed through communications and interactions between people. Furthermore, culture is not stagnant; rather it is continuously changing and evolving through interactions among people within a culture and with those of other cultures. Learning about one’s own and new foreign cultures during the enculturation and acculturation processes also critically depends upon absorption of new information and interpersonal communications. According to Joag (2012), communication is essential either to form a culture or to keep the culture to be fresh.
Technology can be utilized to communicate and interact with other people virtually. It may help to form culture via communication through social media but it is more capable of ruining the interaction between everyone in the society. One of the best things about culture is to transfer convenient information between each other in the society, having real conversation and good time together. But with excessive use of technology, this genuine interaction will come to an end eventually.
Internet benefits people indirectly. One cannot touch it however one can feel and see how capable it is in making the world smaller. Internet brings distances closer. Things that are very far may seem to come close under the internet’s form. Hence, people can be aware of each other’s differences. The living styles and values can be variant in different societies and with the help of technology, people can learn each other’s customs and traditions easily.
There are a lot of different things that exist in this world and most of them are shared through the Internet. It shows and offer transcendent experiences and a new kind of lifestyle for people and the other societies. As a result, people are enjoying themselves more by seeing what satisfies them. Some people are able to control it but some are consuming it excessively. Technology can affect the culture and behavior of the next generation by the excessive use of media. Cultures around the world are not exactly similar with each other. One practice in a culture may be legal in one country but is illegal in another.
Every society desires to preserve their culture as much as possible. But whenever we are encompassing the influence of media, we will probably lose the essence of our culture. It is clear how television has changed the families’ values and relations in public among people and communities. It can be said that technology has removed the physical and mental barriers between the cultures and societies. Because of media, people are sometimes traumatized and they make judgement by simply looking at peoples’ appearances. Media showing the other cultures, traditions and habits all the time makes them not unusual any longer. They are getting normal with their cultural identity to other people.
Media, which is the popular part of technology, is the most life changing medium that exists nowadays. Clothing, food, religion and festival are also affected by the advent of media. People are known to have their own way of clothing, their own special food and beliefs and their own way of celebrating an event. But now, everything has improved and almost has lost the original state of the culture.
Moreover, Media has influenced youth in negative ways. Kids might be affected and manipulated by some sites that has inappropriate information. The ugly part of media is that there are tons of unnecessary information shared by people where cases of bullying and harassment has been increased. People can post brutal and negative comments towards anyone. Those who are already born with the usage of technology can easily utilize it in both positive and negative ways.
Social media has changed Filipino culture and behavior in both the positive and negative ways, we should be aware with those changes so that it won’t cause problems for us and for the people around us. This study aims to see how social media has changed the Filipino culture and its behavior in both the positive and negative ways.
This Study is important because we Filipinos should be aware of the changes happening in our culture and with our own behavior. Filipinos spend a lot of time in socializing with others using their gadgets. It connects distant relatives, old friends, business partners and the like, yet, sometimes ignores the people around, forgetting what we need to treasure and preserve. Our senses narrow down to that bright screen that we forget to socialize and spend quality time towards the people that are with us.
Also, the risk of too much exposure to the radiation from the gadgets is a lingering fear. In the past decades, many changes in technology has happened and one of the great changes that hugely affects Filipino culture and behavior is social media. It changes how we talk, how we work even how we see our country and fellowmen. This study will focus on the positive and negative effects of social media to the Filipino culture and its behavior. Moreover, this paper aims to give the readers the ability to step back, see the changes in behavior the use of social media may be doing to them as an individual and make them more responsible in utilizing it.
As an outcome, Filipino readers may be more informed regarding the changes happening within the country. There may be good things about it that we aren’t utilizing and risks that should make us lesson in our reliance on it if not change how we utilize and see social media. The coverage of this study focuses on the positive and negative effects of social media towards Filipino culture and behavior. It aims to determine how technology has changed the perception of Filipino people towards their culture. Moreover, this research seeks the effects of technology to Philippine culture. With the recent reliance of Filipinos on technology and social media, this paper should give an outside perspective of how it affects our culture and behavior. This study will focus on the positive and negative effects of social media towards Filipino culture and behavior. Due to the advent of technology and the ever growing part of it in our culture, we should be responsible in using it so it doesn’t affect our way of life negatively.
