Delhi, the city of dreams for some, and the city of dead humans for some others with more than 20 million population which is estimated to reach by 22 million in 2021. Delhi is the second most populated city in the country and unfortunately it’s also one among the most unsafe city also. Delhi is famous for several things. You can easily find everything in Delhi from chaotic traffic to stunning mughal era monuments. But What you will not find in Delhi is safety for Girls.
In today’s time, woman have achieved a lot in every field from political to economic, educational to sports but for some people woman are still considered as sex objects. According to a survey done by voluntary organisations ‘Jagori’ and UN development fund for women, in 2010, it is being found that 80% of woman residing in Delhi fear fear their safety.
It has passed almost 7 years when a 23 year medical student was gang raped in Delhi on a bus. It led to huge outrage in Delhi, and government even made some strict rape laws for woman. But were the laws useful to make capital safer for women?
Almost everyday I pick up the newspaper, it carry too many stories of rapes and molestations in the country capital. According to a data revealed by Delhi Police, 5 women were raped everyday in Delhi in 2018. A total of 2,043 rape cases and 3,175 of molestation cases were registered in Delhi in 2018. According to a data published in India today, Delhi police revealed that 5 women were raped and 8 were molested each day on an average in 2018 in our national capital.
Delhi is not only famous for its rape culture, there is another dark side of the city also which you can easily find after the dawn time. South delhi, on one side it’s famous for its educational institutions, on other side it is famous for sex workers. After dawn when the shutters of high end showrooms in a four km. stretch from hauz khas and green park come down, trade of sex workers start over there. The area from hauz khas to green park and till AIIMS could easily be seen occupied by female sex workers standing on the roads, mens come in their cars and pick them up from there and drop them at the same place.
This hub of flesh trade of girls is not only restricted to these places only, chandni chowk, paharganj, G.B.road are also some among the red light areas of delhi. According to a survey done by Indian Ministry of health and welfare, there are nearly 3500 female sex workers in G.B. Road. Most of the workers working in G.B. road are either trafficked from nepal or from other neighbouring countries. Every sex worker working in G.B. Road have their own sad stories about how they come into this business. Majority of them are being sold by their own family members and relatives. To fed their stomach, they have to sell their body 15 to 20 times a day. However there were several steps taken up by government for the safety of girls in delhi. Moreover several apps such as eye watch SOS, b safe, smart 24×7 are some of the apps started for safety of women.
