    The Atomic Bomb EssayOn August 6, 1945, at precisely 8:16 a. m.

, the first atomic bomb exploded in Hiroshima, Japan, just seconds after leaving the Enola Gay. It carried with it the equivalent of 20,000 tons of TNT. Everything within four square miles was desolated. On August 9, 1945, the second atomic bomb exploded at approximately 11:01 a. m. in Nagasaki, Japan, after being dropped from the B-29 Bockscar.

This bomb contained the equivalent of 21,000 tons of TNT, and destroyed everything within three square miles. August 6th, 1945, 70,000 lives were ended in a matter of seconds. The United States had dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Today many argue over whether or not the US should have taken such a drastic measure.

Was it entirely necessary that we drop such a devastating weapon? Yes, it was. If you look at what was happening when the decision was made you would see that each country was getting low on resources but were still willing to fight until they had won. The best thing to do was end the war quick with the least number of casualties possible. What if we hadnt used the atomic bomb? The war would have continued, there would have been more deaths because the US might have tried to invade the main island of Japan. The Japanese would have used any weapon they could have got their hands on. If they had got to the atomic bomb first they would have used it.

It was the atomic bomb that forced Japan to surrender and in turn saved thousands if not millions of lives. We had warned the Japanese that if they hadnt surrendered they would have to pay. Threats should be taken more seriously. If they would have listened they would have been able to avoid this whole controversy.

The Atomic Bomb was a necessity. Without it, the number of men that would have died on both sides far surpasses that of the number that were killed in the droppings of both Atomic Bombs. Let’s face it, the goal of waging war is victory with minimum losses on one’s own side, and if possible a minimum amount of losses on the enemy’s side. The Atomic Bomb cut losses to a minimum and drew war to an end quickly. It was a military necessity.
