Disability is an emerging field within public health where people with significant disabilities account for more than 12% of the US population. People with disabilities have unrecognized populations for public health attention that has made them poor health within this population visible when it comes to health. Adults with disabilities are four times more likely to have a fair or poor health than a person that is not disabled. The core mission of public health is inequities and increasingly framed in health disparities when it comes to improving the health of populations.
Some people are born with disabilities conditions like down syndromes while some demonstrate conditions early on in life such as autism, bipolar disorder and some have acquired disabilities through an injury like spinal cord injury, or a chronic conditions. People with these conditions have different types of health needs with limitation and the underlying of the conditions. People with disabilities sometimes have a hard time with poor health or quality of life because they sometimes have a lack of education, language barrier, and they ethics sometimes play a role in the health disparities.
According to the Affordable Care Act, people with disabilities will have a changes the world and funds who will now have a choice between public and private insurance. Affordable Care Act was signed into law on March 23, 2010 by president Barack Obama. It was to ensure that all Americans obtain health care coverage and seek to improve the overall quality of the care provided including Medicaid expansion, coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, continuous coverage for individuals until age 26. They will receive wellness visits, cancer screenings, and other services that will help them get and stay healthy. ACA states that insurers company can’t discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions by denying coverage, changing higher premium, or refusing to cover care related to those conditions.
Medicaid is an important source of health insurance coverage of people with disabilities because Medicaid benefit for people with disability and they get all the care that they want from health care and they don’t have to worry about what they must do to get health care. People with disabilities may qualify for Medicaid based on their low-income statues, which will enable them to enroll in coverage as quickly as possible, without them waiting for a disability determination that may come with health care. People between the age of 19 and 64 have coverage with health care plan if they met the citizenship requirement if they are not entitled to Medicare and if they have low income. People with disabilities can also qualify for Medicaid at higher incomes if they also meet the disability-related eligibility criteria. Some people with disabilities are unemployed because they are sometimes employed in a state that expanded Medicaid and Some states have expanded their Medicaid program to cover all disable adults that make less income so that they will also have health care plan that will cover them.
People with disabilities will benefit in terms of health care coverage because pre-existing conditions can’t preclude one from coverage and people with existing conditions will be excluded from accessing private insurance primarily because they have ex-existing conditions. There are 86,000 Americans with pre-existing conditions that have gained coverage through a pre-existing condition insurance plan. These types of insurance make health coverage available and more affordable for individuals who can’t afford or deny health insurance because they have a pre-existing condition. ACA prohibits health care plans from putting a lifetime dollar limit on most benefits that people with disabilities receive and it also restricts and phases out the annual dollar limits a health plan can place on they benefit.
Affordable Care Act has some disadvantage that comes with it. People with disabilities can have some changes in the health care plan because there can be some changes in the family or in the health that can limit them from qualify for insurance. Not all disabilities are covered by the ACA and it must undergo some changes with the insurance company so that other people can benefit from it. If people with disabilities are not identified with a population, the equality of care they receive or fail to receive can’t be accurately determined.nnnn
