The last fifteen weeks have been quite busy for me as an English 101 student. My skills and knowledge have tremendously improved in the college level writing, lecture and even in my capabilities in research work. As a reader, my capacity has developed in the area of comprehension. As a writer, I have improved in my grammar, punctuation and even spelling. As a researcher, my improvement has been evident in the area of the self-efficacy. The following article will thus discuss these three areas of development that I have gone through during the time. To start with, as a reader, I familiarized with the sound system of the English language and how the sounds are produced.
In addition to the pronunciations, my comprehensibility enabled me to recognize the typical speech patterns in a college setting. I achieved this by identifying, analysing, as well as, practising the different stress patterns, rhythms and intonation. Throughout the period, I managed to put a self-evaluation on various samples so as know the areas that I needed to up my socks on reading. I have also managed to improve the sound recognition and production. This thus made me relate the phonemes to letters. (Mortimer, Pg. 102) My second area of improvement was in writing. My grammar, punctuation and spelling was significantly enhanced. Chances of me making grammatical errors were considerably reduced.
This limited my chances of changing the meanings of statements and even creating wrong impressions. On punctuation, I was able to know how a statement is constructed and read to make its meaning clear. Punctuations mainly showed the completeness of declarations. Spelling improvement enabled me to cement the connection that is shared by English letters and sounds. This showed that the common connection between spelling and language was proficiency with the language. (Fraida, Pg. 76) My last area of improvement was in conducting English research. Research is quite significant in trying to comprehend the areas not adequately understood in class.
My self- efficacy was considerably boosted. I was able to believe in my capabilities in order to achieve the findings of the researches. My researches were spiced with commitments and any failure was attributed to things that were within my control rather than blaming external factors. Studies based on different topics made my learning fruitful. This was because of the attributes that I had learnt over time in my college. (Dean, Pg. 45). In conclusion, one should note that the knowledge of English is quite necessary in college. Some of its importance that also led to my improvements above include: it is the most spoken language and most dominant in the business community. (Dean, Pg. 38). The above improvements in learning, reading and even conducting researches will not only boost my performances academically but also socially. The above short article is an indication that the fifteen weeks that I have in college have borne fruit. I have thus derived maximum benefit from the session.
