Introduction: The 1920s was a decade of enjoyment, employment, and for some disappointment.
In the following report, you will see how the 1920s was a decade to remember and how it had an impact on the people living through it. It was a decade that would surely have reason to be classified as the Roaring Twenties.”
The Economy:
During the twenties, the economy had a definite impact on society. It benefited some but hurt others. The people who benefited were the prairie farmers and the oil companies. The people who didn’t benefit were Canadian soldiers returning from WW1. Around the middle of the twenties, a wheat farmer was the person to be. Business was booming for all the wheat farmers. Places like Europe, which were war-torn, were hungry for Canada’s wheat and contributed tremendous business to the Canadian wheat industries.
Farmers began making more money than ever before and started buying tractors and other farm machinery to replace their cattle and horses. Wheat prices were at an all-time high, giving Canada’s wheat industry an even bigger advantage and a larger source of income in Canada’s economy. However, Canadian soldiers who had returned from war were expecting to be employed, but even their bravery and service to their country could not secure them a job. They were surprised at how difficult it was to find employment.
While they were fighting in WW1, people who had business related to the military were striking it rich because of the military equipment needed for the Canadian army. For Canadian soldiers who had fought in the war, unemployment was a reality. During the twenties, the oil industry struck it rich in Turner Valley, Alberta, where a huge oil discovery took place. Eventually, this industry created new jobs and more money for the economy. Canada had its good and bad times, but most people benefited from the good times because of job increases from new industries such as wheat and oil!
