For such a problem that has many reasons and factors it is very difficult to pin point a few and direct solutions to produce better results. But there are some solutions which are as follows;
In order to find out whether a major student suits you or not, it is better to take up some courses in that specific subject to see if it coincides with your interests, capabilities, and social set up. Looking through the course material, syllabus, and text books will also help in getting an overview of that subject if you do not want to take up a complete course.
It is better to take up a variety of courses during your academic year that will broaden your horizon and it might be possible you can get interested in science while you think you are better in literature. Sometimes it’s all about looking beyond the boundaries and trying something new. This will help in utilizing your capabilities which you might think never existed. We always think that if we choose a major that’s the end of it and you are just stuck with that specific subject and career line for the rest of your life. But that’s not necessary because sometimes there are flexibilities and chances in different jobs that do welcome people belonging to different subjects and career lines. This ensures creativity and inclusion of new ideas in any field. So if you think you have majored in economics and you do not want to become a banker then you can switch to teaching side or may do something in mathematics and stats. Choosing one major does not hinder you from doing another degree in some other major. You can do a diploma in any other subject as well. So you are stuck as long as you think you are.
As far as the racial disparities are concerned, they are quite negligible now because people look for creativity, excellence, and intelligence rather than the skin color and ethnicity. It has been observed that people who belong to minority or any aboriginal ethnic groups are much more educated and skilled than the dominant ethnic and cultural groups in order to elevate their statuses and earn some respect from others. This sort of complex has given us many educated and experienced people from the minority groups who are doing great at different appointments. While gender disparities are there and they exist because sometimes it is a risk to appoint a female at any important position because she might leave the job after getting married or right after having a baby.
So this discrimination is not created by the people in position and power but by the issues and problems that women face before and after marriage. But if this happens because people think that men are more capable than this is not right and just a myth as intellect and intelligence is not gender bound. It is not important that your success will be measured by the consistency of your job and career. Doing major in one and choosing the career accordingly will give you an idea how better you can perform in that field. I have seen doctors diverting to media and becoming news casters and anchors. Lawyers become businessman and engineers become musicians. So your options are infinite until you think that your life has ended. We need more career counselors who can guide the students about the upcoming subjects and the prospective of the subjects being offered to them at the college. We need to make the counselling sessions must for every student who leave high school so that they can make the right choice before getting into college. The counsellor should also have complete information about the emerging new fields, its requirement, and scope in the future.
The organizations should hire individuals on the basis of their skills rather than their skin color or gender and that is of course based on the selection of a proper major subject. For this the minority groups and women especially should get full information about the major they are about to select and its scope for them in the future. Sometimes the major’ s selection is a matter based on family and social issues and it might sometimes become difficult to cope with such issues and select your choice of major. The pressure built up by family and peers can be handled by educating them too about the subject of their choice and their performance in the major course.
For resolving this issue there can be many amendments and changes that can be brought within and in the society as well. Solutions and proposals for solving this issue does not require man force, money or any other major changes to be brought but awareness and knowledge of the concerned subjects to the students should be provided on time.
