Ocean food found in a very large expanse of the sea which is an area of salt water that extends over a great amount of the earth’s surface and surrounds its landmass. Ocean food is also referred to as seafood which is one of the most incredible source of food in the world reason being for its health benefits, different way in which you can prepare it and its abundance. Seafood can also be unhealthy and that a great amount of fish live in the sea and that a lot of them are yet to be discovered.

    Background of Sstudy

According to studies done by the government along with several health organizations, studies have shown that the overall benefits of eating at least two seafood meals a week outweighs the risks. A unique fat found in the most seafood is Omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. There is also a study going on that suggests these acids may help in the prevention of common diseases which include colds and regulatory out breaking sicknesses. Studies have shown that there are over 30 000 types of fish in the world and that with such large varying quantities of a food source, it makes it one that is almost limitless. People tend to underestimate how much food is out there.

I chose to carry out this study because numerous epidemiological studies and clinical trials have demonstrated that diet is one of the major factors that influence suscepility to lifestyle –related diseases, especially the middle-senile state. Studies examining dietary habits have revealed the health benefits of seafood consumption which contains functional components that are not present in terrestrial organisms.

Problems that are currently being faced are plastics in the ocean which are contaminating seafood. The seafood that we eat is exposed to toxic chemicals in the oceans they inhibit. The toxic chemicals got most of the attention due to them showing up at disturbingly high levels in some fish which is mercury.

Mercury is actually one of the slew of synthetic and organic pollutants that fish can ingest and absorb into their tissue which is sometimes because we are dumping chemicals right into the ocean. According to a study published recently in Nature, scientific reports help illuminate, sometimes fish get chemicals from the plastic debris they ingest.

“The ocean is basically a toilet bowel for all of our chemical pollutants and waste in general,” says Chelsea Rochman who is postdoctoral researcher at the University of California and Davis who authorised the study. Chelsea Rochman and Davis further quoted that eventually, we start to see those contaminants high up in the food chain, in seafood and wildlife.

The UN Environmental Programme Executive Director Achim Steiner quoted that” the Marine-debris-trash in our oceans- is a symptom of our throw-away society and our approach to how we use our natural resources.” He further said that our tendency as humans in being irresponsible when it comes to cleaning up after ourselves is about to get us into a lot of trouble and that we will risk losing a lot of species found in the ocean as well as negatively affecting ourselves. Oceans are filling up with waste because half a pound of plastic waste produced by an average person every day.

The problem is that us as humans we do not recognize how this issue starts with an individual. There are obviously lifestyle changes that we can make to solve these problems whereby some of them include being willing to accept this issue and looking past our denial. In this case, the Government needs to make regulations on plastic if anything is going to change.

These problems can be solved by using a few plastic products, supporting organizations working to project the ocean, influencing change in our communities, making safe sustainable seafood choices and or not purchasing items that exploit marine life.

    Methods of data collection

The methods that l made use of to obtain my information are:

    Questionnaire

This method provided me with the most simple and speedy technique of gathering data about my topic ‘Ocean food vs Health’ in a wide and extended field.

In this method, l sent a questionnaire form in my school to the grade 12’s and outside to the persons that are concerned with a request to answer the questions and return the questionnaire.

For me, the questionnaire was a very good device when it came to securing answers for questions by using the form that I gave the respondents which are the grade 12 learners at my school and people from outside to fill in for themselves. A questionnaire is considered to be a set of stimuli that people are somehow exposed to in order to observe their verbal behaviour under this stimuli.

The results that l got from the questionnaire were easy for me to analyse
