Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in a log cabin in Hardin country, Kentucky to Thomas and Nancy Lincoln. His siblings were Sarah and Thomas Lincoln (Thomas Lincoln died in infancy). He had a great aunt and uncle with their boy Dennis. His mom, aunt and uncle all past away from milk sickness, it would have been hard for Abraham because he was nine years old. Abraham Lincoln’s dad re-married after Abraham Lincoln’s mom. Thomas Lincoln’s new wife’s name was Sarah Bush Johnston and Sarah had three children of her own who were named John, Elizabeth, and Matilda Johnston.
When his new mother came, she had all sorts of gifts for Abraham and Sarah like new shoes and clothes and goose feather beds. She also wanted all her children to go to school, schools back then were also known as blab school’s because to make sure the student’s were studying the teacher had them read out loud. Before this Abraham was already teaching him self to read, write, and do arithmetic, by sitting, by the fire at night and writing on a piece of wood with a burnt stick. After a few weeks of school Abraham was reading out of the bible to his family.
Abraham married Mary Todd November 4, 1842 and had children of their own. Their oldest was named Robert born on august 1, 1843, next was Edward (who dies at age three) born on March 10 1846, then William (who dies at age eleven in the white house) born on December 21, 1850, and finally Thomas Lincoln born on January 17 1853. Abraham Lincoln is best known for leading the country during the civil war. He is also known for the pushing for freedom for all slaves, and the Gettysburg Address. In addition Lincoln is the only president of the US to hold a patent. He invented an air chamber to help boats to get over obstacles like rocks (when activated the air chamber would inflate at the bottom of the vessel, thus raising the boat above the water’s surface. Patent 6469 was awarded to Abraham Lincoln on May 22, 1849) and he signed the first home stead acts, Allowing poor people to obtain land, he also laid the first stepping stone for reconstruction (planned a course of action that would bring together the nation than alienate the south).
Abraham won many awards like the union league of Philadelphia awarded him a gold medal; he also earned the doctor of law, an honorary degree. His face was put on the American penny. Also the Phi/Alpha society in Illinois for an honorary membership. And Lincoln was the first major leader in the US to feel that women should be able to vote. He is in the top three presidents of the United States of America
