Does technology promotes loneliness?
Application of knowledge to the practical aims of human life or to changing and manipulating the human environment. Technology includes the use of materials, tools, techniques, and sources of power to make life easier or more pleasant and work more productive(Merriam Webster). Technology has helped reduce loneliness by making people to have easy socialization, communication, entertainment, education and information. I do strongly believe that technology doesn’t not promote loneliness instead improves ones social life and intelligence.
The use of social media especially Facebook has helped a lot of people connect with each other, reconnect with old friends and make new friends. Technology has helped people socialize greatly all over the world without any hindrance or with less difficulty. Technology has helped build broken or lost relationships and has greatly improved people’s skills on how to socialize. Also social media has helped contribute in one way or the other to the living health condition of people as lonliness greatly leads to depression but such people now have many friends on social media platforms that will keep them engaged, thereby reducing their lonely state which in turn reduces thinking and depression.
Larger connectivity has been improved by technology and has promoted communication. One of the most prominent highlight is social media platforms developed through technological advancement is connectivity. People from all over the world can communicate with each other regardless of their location, religion, ethnicity and status. Also it has improved communication greatly with the oncome of electrical mail known as email and the oncome of cell phone as people can call, speak or text each other without needing to travel a long distance to see the person they desire to speak with. This has greatly saved the time needed to travel to see desired person and has also saved the money that would have been spent on transportation. According to Courier journal, “Today’s society has made it known that without any type of technology that doesn’t connect you to another person, you are basically lost in the world and have no relationships with the people around you” (Courier journal). The world would have been miserable if technological advancement has not been made on communication as it would have been difficult to know what is happening in other parts of the world and this may prove very risky to the lives of many people on the bases of poor communication.
Technology help bring fun and excitement back to people through entertainment. Technological innovations like television set, dishes and some social media platforms like YouTube has been developed to bring entertainment right into the living comfort of people’s home. Technological innovations like YouTube are developed to helps people access different kinds of movies, comedy skits and tutorial videos which helps educationally on any course that may have proved to be difficult to understand. According to Elizabeth Scott, a stress manager “watching a favorite television show can provide a variety of benefits, which may enhance overall wellbeing. She also says, sometimes when we feel drained from too much stress or a lifestyle that is too busy, we just need to baby ourselves and allow ourselves those simple pleasures like t.v. re-runs” (Scott 2018). So therefore technology does not promote loneliness rather it reduces loneliness, boredom, pressure and stress.
Lastly, information. Technology has proven to be able to spread news faster than ever. Without technology people won’t be able to access information from around their surroundings and around the world and this may prove to be very risky to the lives of many people. Technology has been able to develop innovations that provides information, in cases such as an emergency or attack that needs proactive measures to be taken by those who are meant to be informed. For these reasons one cannot be lonely if you are able to access information about your surroundings. Hence technology does not promote loneliness rather it reduces it.
In conclusion, i do strongly believe that technology has played a great role in reducing loneliness. Loneliness can be a dangerous and silent condition that can affect an individual mentally, psychologically, morally, emotionally and socially that could cause depression, obesity and even serious cases of partial stroke. But technology has greatly proved that it annihilate loneliness. I hereby support that technology has greatly reduce loneliness among people and has successfully influence communication, socialization, entertainment and means of information dispersal in a positive way.
