English, 6th Period October 31, 2000 The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros Essay is one of the finestchildren’s book ever composed. It portrays a young girl’s life throughnormal occasions, with simple descriptions. The young girl, Esperanza, enters her own authority and arranges herself to what she will become.
Thechapters are brilliantly written in the order of a child remembrance ofevents or people. My favorite chapter is “Elenita, Cards, Palm Water”. Esperanza hiresElenita, a “witch woman”, to perform a fortune analysis in seek ofinformation about a house. Elenita revealed information about “home in theheart”. Esperanza inferred this to be news of a new house made of heart.
The actions in this chapter are basically realistic. The author is able topresent a visual representation of an actual fortune reading, with aperfect balance of future perception and pure humor. I imagined a old,Latino, Catholic woman in her own home reading my fortune as I read thischapter. And children were watching Bugs Bunny on TV.
“Papa Who Wakes Up Tired in the Dark” is a chapter that I can relateto. Esperanza’s grandfather passes away and her father delivers this news. Esperanza notices her father’s emotions of pain and grief because it wasextremely uncommon for her father to expose these feelings. My owngrandmother passed on from a heart attack and my father was the messenger.
After informing me of this unfortunate news he emotionally collapsed. I,like Esperanza, did not know what to do next, as this was rare. So, Iallowed him to grieve without any interruption. .
