It’s amazing how you feel you can trust someone with your life, and then they just turn against you and make your life living hell. That’s the story of Jane Scott. Jane Scott opens the front door; no one is at home, that’s the way it should be for at least another two hours. She dumps her school bag in the middle of the hallway and looks into the mirror. Her nose is too big, eyebrows are too bushy and she has a mixture of tears and eye make-up streaming down her cheeks.
Jane walks into the kitchen and opens a cupboard and starts looking through the bottles of vodka and gin, she finds a bottle of Vodka three quarters full, she takes it out and puts it on the side. Jane walked up to her housekeeper’s bathroom and took some pills from the cupboard under the sink, and then she walked into her room and grabbed her backpack. She jogged down stairs into the kitchen and put the vodka and pills in her bag, then she hid the bag in her room. I’ll do it tonight she thought. Jane didn’t turn up at drama club. Mrs. Parkinson looked at the empty space and asked, “Where’s Jane, she was in school today wasn’t she? “She was here in Science,” said a boy. I just sat and looked at my script pretending to learn it. Then I heard my name. “Sarah? ” Mrs. Parkinson looked at me hopefully; I felt my stomach begin to churn. “Yes miss? ” I said “Jane Scott,” she said “Any idea where she is? ” “She went home miss, at afternoon break,” I said “She wasn’t feeling too well. ” It wasn’t a complete lie, she had gone home, I think.
When I got home I phoned Jane, well I am her best friend it was the least I could do after… Ten minutes later Haley Goldsmith phoned me. “You went a bit over the top didn’t you Sarah; poor Jane! She said sarcastically. ” I just hung up on her; Haley Goldsmith isn’t worth it I told myself through gritted teeth. Maria the house keeper opens the front door; she takes the shopping through to the kitchen and starts unpacking it, ready for when Jane gets back from drama club. Maria walks into the hall and sees Jane’s bag, that’s strange she thinks to herself, Maria starts climbing the stairs shouting “Jane. ” Jane appears at the top of the stairs.
“Hi! ” said Jane “Didn’t you go to drama club? ” questioned Maria “No,” replied Jane “I didn’t feel like it. “Ok, just don’t make a habit of it. ” Maria gave Jane a hug. “Look what I got from the library, ‘Legally Blonde’, shall we make some popcorn and watch it together? ” asked Maria. “Yes please! ” said Jane eagerly. Hailey used to be best friends with Jane Scott, they were glued together at the hip, they were inseparable. But Hailey Goldsmith goes off people. I don’t know why. Perhaps she gets bored with them. Perhaps she runs out of things to buy them. Perhaps she can’t stand competition. She doesn’t need a reason she just drops them. She dropped Jane.
No one knows why. Hailey has a knack of making people feel special so they get a warm glow when they do something good for her. In French Mr. Wiley asked Jane to read something, Jane read it really well with a proper French accent and all, Hailey just made fun of Jane’s pronunciation. Hailey started to turn people against Jane saying Jane would just use you as a friend to look good, Jane was a swot, Jane was stuck- up, that she flirted with the teachers. In year 9 we re-shuffle forms and Hailey made sure no one put Jane down for being in their form.
It got worse Hailey managed take the mick of Jane every hour of every day and it was so discreet none of the teachers noticed but it hit Jane where she was most sensitive. Hailey would occasionally pretend she liked Jane again and say, “I like your hair, it looks nice down! ” Then she’d say, “I like your trainers but there was really no need to get the same ones as me! ” Hailey would get giggles from everyone that’s why she never stopped. It was 10 pm when I said goodnight to Jane. Jane went up to her room and I knew she would write in her diary for half an hour.
I felt proud of myself, the amount of times I’d seen that diary around and resisted the temptation to read it but soon I’d have to… I’m Detective Fenwick on the 14. 11. 02 I received a phone call from an anxious housekeeper; I think her name was Maria. She started babbling on about how Jane had just disappeared and there was writing on the mirror in red lipstick, something about The Boathouse, so I said “I’ll be right over! ” I arrived at this large house approximately 9:33 am. I knocked on the door and it was answered by this frantic lady, the housekeeper I thought. I told her calm down and tell me every thing.
I listened to her then I went and checked out Jane’s bedroom. There were bed clothes all over the floor, the window was wide open, the rug on the floor upside down, make-up on the floor and on the mirror in red lipstick. It certainly looked like there had been a struggle; I thought to myself looks like a typical kidnap. I said to the Housekeeper “Would you please come back to the police station with me, I need your evidence on tape. ” So we went back to the station where Detective Flint and I interviewed her: Detective Fenwick: When did you last see Jane Scott? Housekeeper: At 10:00 pm, when I said goodnight to her.
DF: When did you discover Jane missing? H: 8 in the morning when I went to say wake up you’ll be late for school. DF: What did you notice as you walked into Jane’s room? H: The mess it was in, she’s normally neat and tidy. DF: Was the window open last night? H: Yes, but only slightly. DF: Did you notice any thing missing? H: Some of my paracetamol was missing; I thought Jane had borrowed it for a headache. Detective Flint: Do you have any alcohol in your house? H: Yes, why? Detective Flint and I exchanged glances. DF: Can you go home and check to see if any is missing, ring us later that will be all thanks.
Jane and I became best friends but Hailey tried to put a stop to that, Jane went away on holiday and Hailey invited me to Spain as they have a beach house there. Well I’d never been abroad before and Hailey’s family were offering to pay so I didn’t turn it down. When Jane found out she went crazy so I shouted at her and said “So, I’m not allowed any friends apart from you now, is that right? ” she shouted back “Any apart from Hailey Goldsmith! ” “Just ’cause your jealous! ” and with that I stormed off. When Maria got home she checked the cupboard and found some vodka was missing, she rang the police department immediately.
Maria went up to Jane’s bedroom found her diary and started reading… October 15th Hailey Goldsmith is an evil cow, we were in hockey and there was a massive scramble and Hailey took her hockey stick and smashed it down on my leg, she made it look like an accident, of course no one believed me when I told them Hailey did it on purpose. October 16th Hailey called me some really awful names and so I started crying but that only created more names; ‘crybaby’ and ‘attention seeking swot. ‘ October 19th Hailey tripped me up in English while I was handing out books.
No one saw and everyone was moving about so I got a, ‘be careful Jane’ and a smirk from Hailey. October 25th I keep on getting little notes from Hailey in my rough book like: crybaby and swot and Roses are red, Violets are blue, Jane Scott’s a tart and a fat cow! Sarah had a go at me and told me to stop being so paranoid but she doesn’t know about all the little things Hailey’s doing it all builds up and makes my life living hell. October 26th I walked in the form today and Hailey was there whispering to a group of people and when I walked in the whispering stopped, I knew she was talking about me.
When I got home the housekeeper wasn’t there again, my mum’s dead and my dad doesn’t care for me, the least she could do was be there for me and show me some sympathy but by the time she’s got home I don’t feel like talking because I’ve just had another session of slicing my arms with a razor blade. October 28th Today Hailey came up to me and said, “Would you like to have my Clearasil Jane, I don’t need it, as I don’t have any spots! ” I shouted back “Keep it” and everyone started giggling. October 29th Hailey kicked me this morning, just kicked me, she didn’t try to hide it or anything. Why doesn’t anyone notice, WHY?
November 4th I walked into the form room this morning and there on the board was written something so horrible I can’t bear to repeat it because I’ll probably end up slicing my arms again. November 12th I going to do it, I’m going to kill myself. It will end all the pain I’m going through. I disguise it as a kidnap I can see it all in my head. November 14th I had a massive argument with Sarah, she’s meant to be my best friend but she leaves me and goes and hangs around with Hailey Goldsmith and laughs at the jokes she’s telling about me. So, when I got home I took some vodka and pills and put them in my bag and hid them in my room.
I’ll wait until tonight. I’ll turn my room into a tip to make it look like someone had kidnapped me and encase any one cared about me I’ll write The Boathouse on the mirror because that’s where I’ll be. I’ll then jump out my window and run to the boathouse. I’ll go right to the top where I’ll put all 10 pills down my throat and drink most of the vodka. I’ve written 3 letters: Dear Sarah I’m sorry I shouted at you and that I was such a bad friend. You were a brilliant, amazing friend to me and I hope you can forgive me for killing myself. By the time you read this I will be dead, take care and don’t feel sorry for me what so ever.
Luv, Jane Xox Dear Maria I’m now dead. Thank-you for being such a brilliant housekeeper, tell my dad I hate him for never being there and maybe if he had of been here I might not be dead now. Luv, Jane Xox Dear Hailey If I called you a murderer would that be too strong a word? By now I’m probably dead. That’s what you wanted me, out of your way, well now you’ve got it. I hope your happy and that you can live with yourself. Jane Maria I know you will read my diary so can you please give the letters to the people they’re addressed to. Thanx This is Detective Fenwick reporting back on the story of Jane Scott.
Jane’s now dead and they are going to have a proper burial for her. There have been lots of tears and this is what has happened: A special campaign has been made by the housekeeper to stop bullies. She goes from school to school and works with the children. Jane’s dad can’t get on with his work any more he’s so distracted so has quit his job, he has become an alcoholic because of his wife dying earlier that year and now his daughter. Jane’s friends had a special memorial service in memory of Jane. Many will miss her. It was all one short, sad end for an extremely beautiful, young, intelligent girl.
