What does Bruce daw’s poetry say about consumerism and it’s influence on modern day society?
Consumerism is a significant feature of modern society and the poet Bruce Dawe is highly critical of it’s negative influence.Throughout his work, Dawe sarcastically attacks the way in which people have been manipulated by the lore and appeal of consumerism. Dawe alerts us to the fact that we have sacrificed our ethics and values in search os a more forfilled and enriched life which is tupified by an obssession with consumer products. he warns us : “remember man you are dust and to dust you shall return.”
Dawe’s warning is clearly presented to us by his dipiction of characters who have been despoiled by money.
and the items that it brings “pretty soon he was old enouph to be like every other godless, money hungry, backstabbing miserable and so and so..” not only do we lose our innocence “and he really was lucky because it didn’t mean anything to him then” but also we ourselves become consumer products in this consumer world. Dawe exaggerates and distarts the techniques that are used in the production of commercials. .
