Major composers include Vivaldi, Bach, and Handel; Carving and Rueben are important baroque artists. ” (Being Dictionary) However, the word “baroque” seems to have a slight negative connotation-the original translations of this word include Italian for “tortuous medieval pedantry’ and Portuguese for “deformed pearl. The philosophical aspect of the baroque makes it important; and the vestiges of the era are still heard today in music- some of the most influential and beloved compositions are regularly performed in concert halls, and snippets of Bach and Vivaldi frequently appear in the solos of heavy metal guitarists. Having long since shed its derogatory connotations, “baroque” is now simply a convenient catch-all for one of the richest and most diverse periods in music and art history.
