The origin of Hip-Hop is fascinating. For some reasons, it is truly a complicated issue. According to Jessica Koslow, “The term Hip-Hop was appeared in the ‘40s when African American would say they were “Hip-Hopping” when they went out on the town. ” In fact, Hip-Hop culture appeared in the late 70’s decade ago, is a genre of music and culture that has come from working class derived from the Bronx, New York City. According to Melissa Velasco, “Hip-Hop is an art form that stemmed from the New York area in the early 1970s. Hip-Hop was originally created by underprivileged youth as an emotional outlet and expression of the artist’s reality”.
Moreover, Hip-Hop is developed primarily among African Americans and Latino Americans. Afrika Bambaataa, who is considered as the father of the genre, first launched four major elements of Hip-Hop culture which includes MCing (rapping people), DJing (the mixer), Graffiti Artist, and Breaking (dancer). Also, there are some other important factors such as beatboxing, Hip-Hop style and slang. However, Kool Herc was instrumental in the creation of Hip-Hop, who brought the Jamaican traditions of “block parties” and “Toasting and Boasting” to New York City and these traditions helped introduce Hip-Hop to the streets of New York City.
Since beginning to emerge in the Bronx, New York, Hip-Hop movement now has spread around the world. Hip-Hop has impacted many different countries culturally and socially in positive ways. For multiple young generations, Hip-Hop has directly reflected the political, economic, and social reactions. When Hip-Hop music genre emerged, it must be based on the DJs, the duty created by swirling rhythms on their special plate. Later, Hip-Hop and rap is often accompanied with beatboxing.
According to Dance Articles, “Hip hop as a culture was further defined in 1983, when Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force released a track called “Planet Rock. ” Instead of simply rapping over disco beats, Bambaataa created an innovative electronic sound, taking advantage of the rapidly improving drum machine and synthesizer technology”. In addition, Hip-Hop culture was formed out this energy of creativity, liberating struggle, and musical nexus. Hip-Hop is an art form, lifestyle, communication tool for human rights and peace rooted in an ancient culture.
As four major elements to make up Hip-Hop including: the rapper, the DJ, the graffiti artist, and the b-boy. A person may be just one of these, but can also be all four. Rap stands for rhythmically, accentuated poetry, and it refers only to the genre of music. A disc jockey (DJ) is a person who mixes recorded music for audiences. Graffiti artist is known as writing, tagging and aerosol art which is a message or drawing created, most often illegally, on a public surface. The link between Hip-Hop and graffiti evolved as a competition, much like the dance moves of the Hip-Hop culture.
Hip-Hop dance relies on house and Rap music and is uniquely individual to the dancer dancing it. This is one of the dance forms that are by the people, as well as a technical art form that is trained at dance studios (Melissa). In fact, Hip-Hop dance began on the street of Brooklyn by the kids. Hip-Hop dance is known as street dance or freestyle dance. With the development of knowledge about Hip-Hop, there are many styles of Hip-Hop created such as Dubstep, B-Boying, Krumping and Clowning, Turfing, Flexing, New Style, Cross-Training.
At the present, the main styles of Hip-Hop dance include B-Boying, Locking, and Popping. These three main styles are also the most popular dance styles in many dance competitions around the world, especially in United States. In addition, Hip-Hop is starting to more greatly influence in the entertainment industry recently. The Hip-Hop culture has entered everywhere from TV commercial to video games, and fashion industry. There are many international Hip-Hop dance competitions and Hip-Hop talent shows every year with the grand prize award.
With the development of music and technology, Hip-Hop dance would have more and more opportunities to make their dreams come true or make their hobby and passion to become their careers. In conclusion, even though Hip-Hop has been globalization, it will develop more and more by creativity and passion of Hip-Hop’s lovers. As many people believe, I believe Hip-Hop culture will have no end and never stop improving. Hip-Hop culture will be always an important part of musician and dancers. I love Hip-Hop dance and love watching Hip-Hop performances. I wish Hip-Hop community will be more popular and development.
