    Dear Diary

I hate it in this dingy little hole of a town, our flat is right near the railway station; the noise is just unbearable. John is very nervous about his first day at the new school and wants to make a good impression. I do not like the idea of him being a school master, it sounds SO BORING.

    Dear Diary

John is home from his first day at Chantrey. He was pleased because the headmaster invited John and me to dinner sometime. I think that’s more rude than polite and that he was just making conversation, the fact was he didn’t say a date or time. The trains are terrible. At least John can get away from them while he is mastering at Chantrey, his ‘dream’ career as a school master. After work he only had to bear fifteen minutes of the trains before deciding that we should all go out.

    Dear Diary

I feel as if John is not telling me everything that is that is happening at school. He would rather go to the local boozer, rather than coming home and telling me he is going out so I don’t go wasting my time cooking him a meal that goes cold. Now he expects me to go to the stupid chapel before going to the headmasters for dinner and wants me to be happy about it. He came home reeking of beer; I am so annoyed at him.

    Dear Diary

I’m surprised that John did not go out for a drink with Cary. I want to meet him if he’s good friends John he must be interesting. I have got to go to chapel today how BORING… One of the boys in the choir, I think his name was Clostermoth or something. He looked very angelic. The dinner was so boring we went the only people there, apart from the Winstanleys, and they made the dinner so much worse. Mr Winstanley was the maths teacher all he talks about is the school, and they haven’t been into town in five years. How boring are they?

    Dear Diary

Finally got a job to get away from all the trains. It’s an usherette at the local Cinema, something interesting and fun, unlike mastering. John came home for lunch after telling me he was staying in school for lunch and expects me to drop everything and go out for lunch with him, but I said no I already had a date with my new boss. It was be fun not talking about mastering when out for a meal. I hope we are not in this dank pit too long, because ever since John started his mastering at Chantrey we have been growing further and further apart, we don’t talk about things any more and he is drinking after school nearly every day with Cary.

    Dear Diary

John told me that we are leaving at the end of term; I want to say I am disappointed but the truthis I am not. I can not wait to leave; it will be nicer without the trains and John being at the bar with Cary at least I will be happy.

    Dear Diary

Two boys from the school came round today. They were looking for John but he was not here. I asked them to stay, there names were Stanley Lipstrob and John Terhew. I didn’t think they smoked but I offered them a fag anyway. It was obvious they didn’t smoke because John Terhew tried to light it while it was still in his hand. When I told them that John wouldn’t be back till after ten they said that they had to get back, I don’t blame them I was a bit pushy. I don’t know why John was carrying a knife up his sleeve the town isn’t rough.

    Dear Diary

John said the inspector came to the school because it appears that a boy had killed himself because he was being bullied, and was also feeling guilty about plotting and killing their last teacher Mr Pelham. He also said that the boys had admitted to coming round here to carve up me to teach John a lesson, I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen the knife. I am disappointed at John for gambling for them, but then they did blackmail him and tried to get him to give them good marks and cheat in the test. I just can’t wait to get away from this dump of a place, and as far away from that school as possible.
