In “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, Madame Mathlide Loisel is a dynamic character who starts of as a middle class lady and by the end she was deprived. Some people are happy and proud of the life they were born into or the life they worked hard to get, but some people desire more than they have. Mme. Loisel is a woman with a pretty face and a loyal husband. As middle class citizens, their expenses are limited — they can only get what they can afford, which are mostly just their necessities in life food, rent, etc..

Their finance is not to far from being categorized as low class citizens, for those people are constantly begging for food and money. But Mme. Loisel”s thoughts are constantly just dreaming about being in the high class rank. The money, the clothes, the silk drawn drapes with the embroidered flowers on the tips is all considered high class. When the story beings Mme. Loisel was a middle class, dissatisfied woman desperately wanting to have the rich fabulous life. “She had no evening clothes, no jewels, nothing.

But those were the things she wanted — she felt that was the kind of life for her. ” Mme. Loisel does not have and cannot afford expensive items. She wants the things that she can”t have. With her dissatisfaction about her life, she thinks the life she has now isn”t the kind of life for her. If Mme. Loisel was given a chance to have the rich life she would cry yes at that very moment. One day her husband and her were invited an affluent, elegant party. “”No… there”s nothing more humiliating than to look poor among a lot of rich women. But her husband exclaimed, “My, but you”re silly! Go see your friend Mme. Forestier and ask her to lend you some jewelry. “” Mme. Loisel considers herself poor and she shows that she is intimidated by rich people. She thinks she knows how rich people will react to middle class citizens. Mme. Loisel shows that she only thinks about herself and with her middle class life, she has to go borrow a glamorous necklace from her friend. Having to borrow a necklace from a friend shows that Mme. Loisel wants to make people think she is wealthy.

The way Mme. Loisel isn”t happy about her life, shows that she never thought about having appreciation to what things she has and what some people can never have. After having a great time at the party, Mme. Loisel discovers she lost more then the necklace. “They could get it for 36 thousand francs. They asked the jeweler to hold it for them for 3 days. And they reached an agreement that he would take it back for 34 thousand francs if the lost one was found before the end of February. M. Loisel had 18 thousand francs he had inherited from his father. He would borrow the rest. Mme. Loisel”s lost of the necklace has caused her and her husband to buy a necklace that is worth more then their savings. I think Mme. Loisel is stuck in a worsen position then she was in before. Mme. Loisel and M. Loisel will have to borrow an abundant amount of money that they will have to pay back with every earning M. Loisel and Mme. Loisel will get.

They must work hard for all the amount of money they can earn, they must pay back loans they borrowed with interest, and they must even have to sell their house and other valuable items. She became heavy, rough, harsh, like one of the poor. Her hair untended, her skirts askew, her hands red, her voice shrill, she even slopped water on her floors and scrubbed them herself. ” Mme. Loisel lives the life that she thought she will never live. From how badly she looks, Mme. Loisel is a low-class lady filled with misery. She is poor, sad and is classified as a pauper. A lady, who was once a charming woman, is now living the life as an ugly lady with privation. Mme. Loisel now knows how good of a financial position she was before.

Her lack of appreciation put her and her husband into a dept that has caused them to suffer and live a miserable life. Hence, Mme. Loisel never knew how to appreciate her life. Her grief throughout the story leads her and her husband to a more terrible life. The dream of being high class is still wanted, the clothes, the jewels are still sought after and through all of this, Mme. Loisel became ugly, weary and bitter. Once something goes away you may perhaps never get it back — appreciate what you already have now because you never know if it”ll suddenly be gone.
