My mixed media collages combine elements of my own photography, art papers, paints, inks, and in some instances found images and antique photos. The collages are created through a process of tearing, cutting, layering and under/over glazing with glues and pigment. They are often framed within hand-made wooden structures that are also collaged. My interest lies in creating organically evolved mosaics that fuse rich color and textures with political and historical statements - purposefully fractured to inspire a visceral response to the subject and place. Dramatic stories abound in my work. I’m fascinated with the way people, past and present, interact and respond to their real or dreamed about environments. Perhaps this is due to my years of work as a scenic designer specializing in conceptual installations for alternative theater spaces.
