Michael is a painter whose abstract paintings are firmly
grounded by his love of language. Phrases, snatches of conversation
and statistics all find their way-both directly and obliquely-onto
the surfaces of his work, challenging the viewers to 'make the leap'
between paraphrase and paradox.
Born in Philadelphia PA in 1960, Michael studied printmaking at the
Philadelphia College of Art and the Fleisher Art Memorial. After
independent study in Europe and three years with the Philadelphia Art
Collective HIGHWIRE he moved to New York City's Lower East Side in
1990. Michael's work has been exhibited in many group shows in the US
and abroad, and he participated in an art exchange with Sol LeWitt in
1995.
Now living in Chatham NY with his family since 2003, Michael finds
inspiration in the natural world as his paintings take on a leafy,
layered surface that can obscure his texts as well as highlight their
inner meanings.
