Julia Johnson Rothenberg
A primary influence in my paintings begins with my fascination with the varied phenomena of nature – figural, sculptural and geological features, color. A second influence is memory. Memory and experience of place began my artistic work with landscapes, quite literally, with drawing and painting places that I wanted to remember in particular ways. It was through this artistic working with places that I began my dialogue with what I see and experience in a place and the elements of painting, as in this series of Iowa landscapes. Ideas of place become more infused with texture, colors, line. My paintings still contain referents to place, such as the Iowa fields where I grew up, or the woods and meadows of upstate New York where I live now. Recently I have become fascinated with artifacts of the distant past: the rocks, hills and ancient buildings of southern France, the paleolithic tools found in Columbia County New York. These have an enduring beauty that speaks of what humans have done for thousands of years. Even when they are drab in themselves, I see them drenched with color.
